A nice surprise!
« on: October 07, 2009, 10:24:38 pm »
The other day, I found a note on my field gate where my hens are kept.  It was from a lady asking if I could rehome 6 free range hens, as she had a lot and these were getting bullied.  Also had a RIR cockerel she needed to rehome. Rang her and had a chat, and said I would take the hens.  I was not expecting them to be anything special, as they were freebies after all!!!

Lady brought the hens over to me tonight (I can see her field from my field, so not far!)  I peered into her container, and there were 8 hens, not 6.  And they are big ones, and in lovely condition.  I think they are some she hatched herself last year.  Going a bit dark, so could not have a proper look, as I had to put them in the shed, but there is a black rock among them, and a couple of welsummers, and all 8 are big and heavy.
Lady wanted to give me a RIR cockerel too, but I declined that, as got 5 bantam cockerels here already.  But mentioned it to someone this morning, and his grandson wants a RIR, so the lady is pleased about that.

So, quite pleased with my bargain ......plus I think they have gone through the molt, and look to be laying as well.

Yes, will take a piccie for you .....like I sad it was going dark, but they all look ok to me - and were certainly heavy when I enlisted OH to help me carry the crate down to the shed.  Bantam cockerel opened one eye from his spot on the perch, and surveyed his new batch of ladies as I put them in the shed next to him!

:)lucky you i was looking for a rir hen to go with my lovely rir cock and someone told me a man in the next town was looking for new homes for his chickens when i arrived he had 4 hens 2 going to new homes 1 light sussex & i rir but i could have the other two foc one a rir 2008 hen the other 2009 pol barred plymouthrock i now have 1 very happy rir cock bird he had already 2 x blackrocks and 1 light sussex wifes  so hes been a busy boy in the last few days. both new hens are laying so im very happy.
the downside this man had just liked the idea of eggs so got himself some chickens but had no idea of food housing etc they were kept in a small rabbit hut and run stood on paving slabs with bark for bedding feeding them corn in the middle of a housing estate he said they had to go as they smelt and made a mess.
