Anyone reared hyline chicks before?
« on: April 10, 2014, 10:49:22 pm »
Hello, I have been given 10 Hyline chicks after our neighbour had a school project to hatch out eggs and look after the chicks for 10 days, now they are ours to keep so I couldn't say no! They are doing great at 3 wks old but I have a few queries and I have no experience with this breed, our other hens are all marans and sussex.  Firstly they are coloured according to sex when they first hatch, at first we had 6 boys and 4 girls, but now their proper feathers are coming one of the males is turning the same as the females. Assuming most males probably end up as zoo and pet food at a day old, this is probably not normally seen but I am wondering if anyone else has any experience with keeping both sexes and what colours they turn out? Also does anyone know if the males will be any good to rear for meat, or are they of any value for breeding? Thanks in advance
