Lamb issue
« on: April 01, 2014, 11:29:47 pm »
One of our 5 week old lambs is unwell. Last Monday night I noticed her breathing was laboured and she sounded snuffly. I injected her with alamycin for a respiratory infection. The next day she was still the same so took her to the vets, she was given a stronger antibiotic (long acting but unsure of the name), B vitamin, selenium & vitamin E injections followed by fluxin for pain relief/anti inflammatory properties. The vet though her problem seemed to be stemming from the upper rather than lower respiratory tract. So far although brighter she is certainly not right & not eating sufficiently to maintain weight. She is still mooching around and is eating small amounts of creep & drinking in small amounts from the ewe. Her breathing is still not right but not as snuffly. She has no signs of scours, isn't hunched but has lost weight. I have tried topping her up with a bottle but she just won't take it despite me trying twice a day. I don't want to stress her further by forcing the issue; she's remarkably feisty for a poorly lamb. Today I have wormed her with Ovispec just in case she has a worm burden that isn't showing typical symptoms. To be honest I'm at a loss as to how to best proceed, anyone got any suggestions as to what the problem might be & any solutions?

Give your vet another ring & let them know how shes progressing.  She may need a follow up of more antibiotics & flunixin.  This is often a tricky time for lambs as the colostral antibody levels have dropped away but their own immunity has not fully developed.

Maybe she s a little de hydrated, I've go rehydion here, meant for calves but very good, I mix a few cc s with a little warmwater and syringe in mouth slowly.  It's an electrolyte solution x
