Polytunnel Position
« on: September 21, 2009, 06:55:04 pm »
Hi,

I have a 72ft x 24ft polytunnel to put up but i'm unsure which position will be best. I can either put it running parallel with a barn running North/West to South/East or have it running away from the barn running North/East to South/West. We are in a rather exposed site so was wondering which direction most people would favour?

Thanks,

Hi,
the advice I was given when erecting mine by a neighbour was to monitor and map the prevailing wind and erect the polytunnel so the wind comes up and over it- then the only risk is when it changes direction so make sure you can open up the sides on those days to reduce the stress on the tunnel.
we erected ours during the spring and are now awaiting the winter winds.... so far so good though. we've also planted willow saplings and erected a 4' fence to act as a wind break to the prevailing winds as we are also on a very exposed hill and I don't want to watch it going into orbit one day! might still happen but my neighbours has been up for 8 years so far with no problems so fingers crossed!
make sure you do the ground works first though- we didn't and have to wait until its empty in a few months to dig drains and raise the beds as it floods with heavy rain- the joys!!!
good fun though!
good luck
Lynne
