quail going off their legs
« on: April 05, 2014, 08:36:05 pm »
not sure whats happening here 3 out of 24 quail are staggering around as if they are drunk and keep falling over. they are under heat about 3 weeks old running on bark chippings with plenty of chick crumb and water. as far as I can see there is no coccidiat in the crumb mix should I get a different chick crumb with the coxy stuff in it? I have just put in a dish of soil to give them a boost

hmm, not sure what could be up. I've never had anything like it with my quail. Do they have any problems with legs, splaying etc.? I know they roll around all over the place in the first week but 3 weeks seems a bit old to still be doing it.

Fingers crossed they come right, sorry i'm not more help  :fc:

I wondered if it could be splaying, they seem healthy otherwise, they were reared on chippings and seemed to avoid the rolling stage. they have however grown at a phenomenal rate and I wondered if they were too big for the muscles.

thanks for the reply

They do grow really quickly .... that's norm as they are fully grown and mature by 6/8 wks.

You don't think it could be anything to do with the wood chippings . We have always reared ours on shavings. They do seem to roll and topple about more than chicks in the first few days but usually very strong by 3 wks.

You could try medicated crumbs but doesn't sound like symptoms for cocc.

Think if it were me I'd just try shavings.
