Do I Need To Segregate them?
« on: February 10, 2014, 06:08:34 pm »
I am looking to keep about 15-20 Silkie Bantams and around 20 or so Suffolks or another breed and I was wondering do I need to separate them. Space is no issue and I have a half acre field which is not used for anything so was thinking of keeping chickens on it. My question is Do I Need to segregate them and keep them in two different coops, or keep them in one big run with a converted shed as a coop?

They should be OK if they have enough room. The only issue you might get is a big cockerel injuring a small hen when he jumps on her! We lost a legbar pullet last year because a full grown copper black got in and tried to get it on with her. I'm sure he didn't mean to break bones but he did. If you don't have boys then I wouldn't worry.
