ear tag question
« on: January 15, 2014, 07:25:01 pm »
hi all. apologies if this has been covered before but cant find it. We always send our lambs off for slaughter on batch tags which we usually put in the night before to reduce risk of them losing them. this year however we had them grazing on a rented field a couple of miles away from home so we chose to tag everything early ( back in the summer) just in case they got out. I have 2 wethers going next week who both lost there batch tags fairly swiftly. I am not impressed with the quality of the tags at all as out of 12 ear tags we put in a variety of lambs and older ewes only one is still in place. never had that happen before- serve us right for changing makes and wont use them again but for next week its too late to do anything else. i'm reluctant to re tag them but would rather take them in with a couple of batch tags in my pocket - any  thoughts ?

If I read the question correctly then surely all you need to do is  put in  a single slaughter tag just before loading :raining:

Tag them when loaded ready to go... thats what we did with 1 of ours last year that lost her tag a week before slaughter.

Apologies for not being clear.  Don't want to re tag if can get away with it.  Tags were rubbish from the very start and wasted several just getting them In as they kept breaking. Eventually got them all tagged but some just fell off or tore out within a few weeks
