Preloved.......rant
« on: October 27, 2013, 08:36:35 am »
We buy and sell using preloved as i'm sure many of you do.........we had a woman purchase at a very reasonable rate as she was very local to us    and they seemed a nice family    hatching eggs   from which she got a good hatch of pullets...................great stuff  ...........she had an orp bantam cockerel we were interested in   very young    for which she wanted silly money.....when we looked again for girls     she decided they were no longer for sale...........
She messaged us yesterday after a Light Sussex cockerel........good quality....that she could breed from next year........oh.....and it had to be free.......... ::)   OH was very polite in his response....unusually so in fact......I'm still seething........it p****s me off along with all of the 'loving home for your unwanted livestock as long as its free adverts'.....go buy it like we have to...and my life have we ever been caught out in our naievity........read one for a sow in pig that they no longer had room for   yet at the same time were advertising an unused crew yard for rent and for unwanted livestock  .........I do realise there are whys wherefores and a place for everything but can't help getting rattled
Rave over
Thank you for reading

I know what you mean.
there is a running "wanted ad" on Anglo.info classified ads. Someone lists all the "free" animals she wants for her "Loving home". What gets me is her specific list and that around her request are ads from people trying to sell the stock they have cared for payed for and are trying to recover a few € from.
The same site often lists giveaways - coqs and goats usually but no she wants specific ducks, chickens, goats and sheep !

The trouble is many non country people think that everything grows for nothing in the country. Anyone who owns land must be hugely rich and stuff just grows doesn't it? They have no idea about proper husbandry and expect people to just give away animals they have bred, cared for, fed, vaccinated, drenched, sheared, etc etc. The "I want it for free" types should be shot at dawn, the same as the "pet pony brigade" cited in an earlier post this week. That's my rant over for the day, off to batten down the hatches before the predicted wind gets here. Keep safe everyone.

When I buy or sell animals I check Facebook, google phone numbers and e-mail addresses, just to check they are what they say they are. I do not mind buying off a dealer as long as I know and the animal is well but I hate people passing themselves off as private when really they have only had the animal a couple of weeks. Even in this climate an animal is worth something if you want it. I have horses and the amount of people who want a good horse with a list of what it should do, and then say can they have it loan?
I got caught out last year despite my checks and it cost me several hundred pounds so now I am really wary.

I think the problem stems from those who give away stock, on many occasions i have seen free to good home, 3 year old Kune kune , or  over run with cock birds free to good home, yes i can understand some will not be able to kill the stock, but this gives people the brass neck to start a collection list , hoping everything will be free

any animal should at least have a minimum fee of £5 per bird or £10 per pig, this may stop these people wanting everything for nothing,

There are indeed some wierd characters using preloved. I rang a woman about some pigs and when I told her I wanted them for meat she got quite stroppy and wouldn't sell them to me. Another couple of ads I answered turned out to not be what they were describing at all. It seems to be the haunt of dodgy sellers and nut cases to me.

We have used it quite successfully hughsey   but as ever you do get some strange characters.......husband is quite intrusive in a very polite way when selling livestock....and has on occasion refused to sell to what he considered to be the wrong home......example.....one idiot wanted to chuck an 8 week old jrt under his floorboards as he had rats..... :-\  ............a guy selling Berkshire pigs only wanted to sell gilts for breeding......unregistered...etc etc........some perspectives I understand...some I don't........but the can I have what you've got...the very best...and can I have it for free really ticks me off. Glad its not just me :sunshine:

To be honest it's not just preloved. I've just remembered a bloke who rang me wanting to buy some weaners last year. I didn't really want to sell any but he was quite persistent, even saying he would take them off my hands cheap if I skipped the paperwork! This would save me money apparently! He got fed up and hung up when I explained that the price went up as they got older. He thought they should get cheaper as I would be more desperate to sell. Luckily we can now sell all our output as meat through our market stall so don't need to put up with idiots anymore.
