"Farm gate" selling is when you sell direct to the end user, not through a third party like a wholesaler or another business. A lot of the rules are more relaxed for this. Selling at markets or even your own shop would qualify for this so long as you're selling goods that you've produced yourself.

I don't see why not. Remember though that you'll need to speak to your local environmental health. You must be registered with them to operate any food business and you'll still have to comply with basic food safety stuff like keeping records of temperatures etc. They can advise you of what they expect and they're very helpful in my experience.

Ah, distance selling of food has its own set of guidance and regulations and cannot be classed as farm gate. You'll need to register with Env Health and satisfy all of the labelling, weight and food specific regs. All the info is here:

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.  :(

the EH are very helpful and supportive though - ask them in advance for advice and they are not something to be scared of.

Yes, totally agree, I should have put a more positive spin on it! They've always been very helpful when we've needed advice, just didn't want the OP to get in trouble.

yes, plenty of icepacks and temperature recording. its all quite simple so dont be daunted. different regions may have different requirements but our EH was happy with me using the boot of my car. its all logical really. our EH came out to the farm for a friendly chat before we spent any money and he advised us what to do, ie repaint the floor of the freezer room, rodent control, temp recording etc.
