Going to have a year off
« on: August 28, 2013, 09:05:08 pm »
This years pigs seem to have been hard work and as we had a lousy spring and the grass didn't grow the pig fields look pretty rough, they are not muddy just bare. Feed prices have been a bit of a shock as my ton ran out and i am now paying £9.80 for a 20 kg bag.Now the plan is to have a year without pigs and get the fields clean and with grass again, then get a couple of Kune Kunes just for ourselves.  At what age would I be sending off Kunes and what sort of weight should I expect?

We send our Kunekunes off between 10 and 12 months old, they're normally around 85Kg at that, but if you've got a butcher who works on a £ per kilo for butchery charges you can send them off smaller

We sent one away for a friend (it was early - only approx 6 months old) the deadweight was 30Kg but there was a tremendous amount of meat, more than I expected.

Kunekunes are good at regenerating the ground  ;) When ours arrived here they went onto really rough ground that hadn't been touched for years (over 20) it was patchy, reedy and not the best quality. After the first winter the grass came up beautifully  They rootle about in the bare bits, disturbing the soil and I think this encourages new growth too.

I'm tired too and the OH is still in hospital and unlikeley to be to help out for some time. I plan to have a year off after we (I) process our 3 GOS when it gets cold enough . It can all seem pretty relentless at times especially when it is just me eating my way through last years pork. Oh for a piece of fish  ;D
