Help? Goat got into whole wheat
« on: August 20, 2013, 01:13:14 pm »
HI
hoping for advice
my 5yr old milker (actually only rearing 2 kids this year) got out of her pen and found the whole wheat overnight/early this morning.
It was in a 45gal drum shape so quite high sided, she knocked the top off, but I'm not sure how much she's reached down to and eaten, she was quite disgusted at not being offered breakfast with the rest of them. I've turned them out and keeping an eye on them/her.
Hoping that whole wheat wasn't as palatable as concentrate, but what should I be watching for, rather than wait till she's actually bloated? She's laid down with the others, seems to be chewing 'cud', and not in any discomfort, would there be any problem signs showing yet?
Could whole wheat 'poison' her in some way?
she may also have eaten quite a bit of FRESH HAY, about 4 weeks from making, but I've been having to feed some of that in anyway, does this cause a problem with goats? I have noticed the 'poo' is a bit soft instead of pellets.

I would just watch for regular droppings and if she looks uncomfortable - make her get up, put a lead on her and walk her round. You would then see if her sides are too wide/tight to the touch and full. Then just keep walking her, give her an oil drench with some bicarbonate of soda in it and massage her sides. this should get things (as in gases mainly) moving in both directions

and just hay for the next day to let her get back to normal.

If she wasn't showing any signs by lunchtime she should be ok I would think.  :fc:

Thanks Anke, she's still wandering and grazing, I think we've got away with it, hopefully it wasn't to her taste and the new hay was more tempting, though I think that may have made them all a bit loose. I did panic when I walked in and the lid was on the floor, she had gone back to her pen.
