Abattoir question
« on: August 14, 2013, 08:40:39 pm »
I have 4 hebridian/shetland lambs that I want slaughtered this autumn. I had hoped to find a local to do the job on the croft but that may not be possible. The nearest abattoir is 80+  miles away so it would be quite a trek. I also worry about the cost. Can anyone give me an idea of what that might be?

I've no idea what prices are up where you are; hereabouts it's around £12-15 kill only, £20-£25 kill and cut.
Don't listen to the money men - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing

Unfortunately where we are its £20ish for slaughter and another £20-25 for (albeit very good) butchery :-(

Have you thought about home kill if its just for yourself? If I didn't have an abattoir 6 miles away and had to travel that distance its not only a more economical option but also actually more humane for the sheep. My husband did a lamb butchery course but suspect can be self taught. Would just need to look at the options / legalities of humane killing methods but a shot to the head while its feeding in the trough in your own little pen has got to be a better end.

Is dingwall your nearest abattoir? If so are you 80miles east or west?!

Killing charge is 16+3 for qms levy and vet
Cutting is 80p/kg
Delivery back to your local butcher £5 per carcass.
