Very steep learning curve...
« on: July 08, 2013, 11:32:27 am »
What a day yesterday!

1. Dyed some of my fleeces using stove top process and put them out in the sun (yes, I know, hard to believe)to dry

2. Carded the wool into rolags (well - I like to call them rologs but really more of a 'bunch'

3. Spun some wool using my new turkish spindle

4. Did Andean bracelet playng (thank god for youtube!)

I now have my very first ball of wool.  So excited it's ridiculous.  had to share.

Excellent Greenerlife - well done  :spin:    What an industrious day.   Did you like the Turkish spindle and find it easy to use?  I find mine are less likely to crash to the ground when my attention wanders, and spin for a nice long time.
I decided yesterday to try something new - plying my Turkish spindle cops on to a spindle.  Just to make it harder I decided to do three-ply  ::) .  Hmm - after several attempts and a long time spend unravelling the cats nests I gave up and plyed on a wheel. Just 30gms of yarn and I've no idea what to make with it - very boring grey and brown.    Next time I'll try two ply onto a spindle 8)

Keep up with the spinning and yes - do post some pics  :excited:

I've tried unsuccessfully before - i may wait until the tame techie arrives!

Thanks fleecey!  yes - love the turkish spindle.  It's a lot heavier than the other one as it is weighted and spins like crazy, so I have to be faster, which is difficult because the fleece I have is as coarse as a badgers armpit.  Am loving it all.  Am going to set up my new loom later on and use some of my slubby wool.  (ie I am not very good at producing a fine yarm, so I have started saying things like "textured".  :innocent:

You will find the more you spin the thinner the yarn andless bumbs, textured yarn, then when you want to do textured it seems hard.Thats what makes hand spun different to bought wool. Its very adictive tho,but been so hot not seem to getting round to the craft at the mo

I have already found that the balls of wool I am producing now, are much, much more even than my first attempts Balloch!  It is definitely addictive - i have been standing in the shade in my garden, carding and spinning and braiding!  I feel sorry for my vegs and flowers - they are being neglected!

I agree it's a bit hot for anything to do with wool atm.

Yes, I'm trying to work my way through as many as possible before the weather breaks.  Looks like rain for us on Wed - it will be sucked into the earth and make no difference at all.    I want to start prepping and spinning every fleece I wash, but they are going to be combed and my new combs will be a good few weeks before they arrive  :excited: :excited: :spin: :knit:
