Sexing Silver Laced Wyandotte Bantam Chicks
« on: July 10, 2013, 06:14:38 pm »
I have 2 x 6 week old and some 2 week old SLW Bantam chicks and am trying to work out about sexing them. I have read in one place that you can't go by the comb and wattles and then some where else says you can. With the older 2 one has a slightly redder comb and starts of wattles and the other one is still quite pale and no wattles.

Can anyone tell me how to sex these please?

Thank you in advance.

That's how l sex my chicks.  The comb is a bit bigger and redder in the males and the comb is smaller and pale in the females. At 6 weeks you should be able to tell the difference.

Thank you mentalmilly.

If it is basically the same as others then I have one of each with the older ones. The others are 2 weeks old and one hardly has any wing feathers at all and is quite yellow with some darker patches. I am thinking male and the others have fairly well feathers wings and are darker so possibly female. I will have to wait to confirm that one. I got them because I wanted something a little different for my smallholding - breeding birds to sell as pets. They are beautiful little things.

We used to breed Wyandottes and will do again soon. By 8 weeks they had all sexed obviously, in that the cockerels had noticeably larger combs and stood more upright. At 8 weeks we had one crow, then stop at 10 weeks because his sibling was dominant. Just for your interest our record for youngest crower is a Leghorn bantam at 3 and a half weeks, prompted no doubt by his older sibling who started at 4 weeks.
