Carmarthenshire gang, any recommendations for a vet?
« on: June 12, 2013, 12:03:50 pm »
Morning all (just)

I'm looking to change vets - again - are there any round here that actually know about animals, operate professionally and don't cost the earth?

Not sure if I'm allowed to give specific names...I used BH in Ammanford, nearest, but found them to be much more expensive, and didn't like one of their vets who I always seemed to get sent in to see lol, so changed to Llandeilo (not BH the others)

They've just p***ed me off this morning, attitude and general unprofessional manner, but most of the vets are really nice, although none seem to know a lot about pigs and specialise in larger farm animals like cattle - got actual wrong info from one once about pig vaccinating!

I really want to put together a good whole farm plan, including pets, based on local knowledge of resistance and occurrence of particular problems. I seem to be moving further and further from home - not an issue until you need a call out!

Help I'm going mad!!!  :'(  ;D

Cannot help with recommendations, as not in your area.  But having gone through similar things with our local vets, I know how you feel.

We had a really nice vet - rather eccentric, surgery was in his lean to next to his kitchen.  The good thing was he was a goat keeper, so knew his stuff......quite often you would have to go down to the shed and shout to let him know of your arrival, and he would appear covered in straw!!  But, he gave you straight talking advice, and quite often suggested things other than injections that were way cheaper.  His actual prices were amazingly cheap.  Unfortunately, he retired.  I returned to the village vets, and the old vet had retired by this time.  New guy is not a people person - he is well known for his bluntness, and downright rudeness to clients.  Has a lot of young vets just out of vet school, and some of their diagnosis have been iffy.

I have now moved to a practice some distance away.  They have a day in this area for routine things like jabs etc.  and on that day there is no call out charge, just the injection or whatever costs.  They have designated vets for pets, farm animals, ones who specialise in wormers, lameness in horses etc.
All the people I have come into contact with at this place have been nothing but helpful and polite, and the vets I have had visit, cannot be faulted for their knowledge and experitise.  They also have a clinic to take animals for operations - very impressive place with all the stuff.  And the best thing is their prices are not outrageous!!

Do hope you find somewhere like this!!

I'd be interested in the answers to this too; I currently use the big vet in carmarthen (off the A40, near the market), but have been less than impressed with their service.

Was thinking of trying the newcastle Emlyn vets next - my neighbour uses them.

Do you mean the vet by the clock tower , near the castle , in Emlyn ? If so i went there a few years ago and he was fine , just openened then i think .
I am nearer Llandysul though so use the vets by the fire station . Lots of different vets with different specialities there . Fair prices compared to others around .
Nice helpful  people there too .

FK and Mab, I am with Bush House in Llandeilo (Ffairfach). I have used them several times both for my dog and also sheep and pigs. I haven't had a problem with them and prices for farm animals don't seem too bad (I think they are all expensive for domestic animals) although I don't have anything to compare them with.
Today I received my bill from the FEC and it was £12

Thanks Beewyched and Bionic

I think I may try BH Llandeilo, and the others you suggested BW, you're right Bionic I think I was comparing prices for pets, vaccinations are really dear from BH!

I'll give them both a call and see what vibes I get!  :fc:

Oh, maybe there's two vets in NE; I was thinking of the one on the other side of the bridge, opposite the chinese - I didn't know there was one by the clocktower... I'll have to check 'em out.

I haven't been to Emlyn in a while , the one by the clock tower may not be there anymore . If you walk from the clock toward the castle  , the vets was on the left , just after the few shops on that side .
I didn't know there was a vets by the chinese ! lol .
I don't get out much anymore , they may catch me if i do lol .
