« on: April 28, 2013, 02:06:05 pm »
Bought two charolias ewe lambs earlier in the year I've had them about 2 months now they have been in with my ram but obviously not enough to be heavy in lamb but one has bagged up and looks not far off lambing rang person who I bought her off ram is either a soay X Shetland or Southdown ram lamb? I'm hoping the soay X Shetland is the culprit will she lamb ok she is a good size but not full grown

I was hoping someone else would've responded to you on this one as I've no personal experience. It is generally the case that, although not ideal, if the ewe lamb is a decent size she should lamb ok. Just make sure you're around if there are any complications but only assist/call vet if she's been labouring for a long time to no avail. As you'll not know how many she's carrying don't leave her to it until you're sure the placenta is on it's way out.
Hope that helps

We lamb quite a lot of last years ewe lambs. They all lamb fine and that's to a big texel. They do however sometimes have a tendency to be less maternal. Most are fine but some resent the lamb drinking, some butt it awayand some almost seem to think they have just had a big poo and walk away. They do however normally take with a bit of persistence in a pen. The other concern would be if they have enough milk. If they are still growing themselves they can be a bit short on milk. We would only ever leave a single on them, although it is rare they have twins.

Ah you see, I didn't know of the milkiness issue or the big poo thinking!

We also lamb some hoggs, generally lamb easily, although if they are carrying a single that has gone a bit over large they may benefit from a little help. Agree re having them penned to mother on, have found with twins if one wonders off at lambing time it can be harder to get them to take both, so best to keep them close to mum.  We find the mums are very good once they have got the idea of what to do, if somewhat ticklish about their udders at first.
Quite a few of ours do have twins, last year they all did, we took some off, but the last few to lamb kept both lambs, we make sure that the lambs have access to adlib creep feed to help take the pressure of mum's milk supply, and also feed the mum's well after lambing, they should have less feed than an adult ewe prior to lambing.  This year we are going to wean the lambs at around 6-7 weeks old to give the mums plenty of time to recover and grow on through the summer.
