Coturnix Quail Question
« on: April 26, 2013, 09:15:27 pm »
Just curious as to what others experiences are with quail.

I was looking at parting with my quail to replace with young stock -they are 15 months now. I don't push them with artificial lighting. I thought I missed an egg one evening last year because I had an extra egg. But last night and tonight I collected 8 eggs each night from 7 quail. I have heard that they can lay 3 eggs a day if conditions are right (to much for the poor little things in my opinion). They do love burying the eggs in the bedding! I thought they were supposed to slow down as they get older.

Did I read right they can lay 3 eggs a day?

I've found that even older quail can lay two a day at the beginning of the season.  Breeding fever!  Mine have always slowed down a bit by the time June comes.

I've almost given up on quail.  Very few people want to buy the eggs round here.

Yes, we frequently get 2 per bird each day ..... esp. at the beginning of the season. Occasionally we have had 3.

We keep ours until they pop their clogs, as they don't seem to live that long anyway .... in most cases up to 2 years or so. Seem to lay until near the end.

Hi,my quail cam in to lay a few weeks ago after a brief rest.this is now there second year and I would say they are laying far more than they did last year.
I too was going to replace them, but they will be staying now.

My quail got to 3 1/2 before the mink got them. I didn't notice them slowing down at all, Even though they were knocking on a bit for quail.
I would love some more, but having real trouble finding any near my location  :( .

Maybe I will keep them for a bit longer. There are supposedly standard quail - I haven't weighed these ones but must be over 200g.

The new ones I have are 2 1/2 weeks old and I am sure they are smaller than the others I have hatched but the eggs were bigger. I will just have to wait and see.
