Rigged ram in with barren ewes and stores
« on: April 08, 2013, 07:48:07 am »
Never had one still on the place for so long but I have 2 rams that were poorly ringed last year and as such now have a retained ball. All the others are off to the abattoir this morning but these 2 still not fit, I have two fields available to me one has the remaining store lambs that are soon to go to market when finished but also running with these are a couple of barren ewes. Or I have the field with our ewes and lambs in, however I don't really want to put any extra mouths in this field as we are feeding concentrates and the grass is not exactly plentiful.

Will the rigged rams potentially cover my barren ewes at this time of year, not worried about the stores as they will be down the road in a few weeks and dead.

yes they will try and cover the barren ewes, but if they are truly barren then the ewes will be unable to get pregnant so this wont be an issue. However if they are late finishing rams anyway this may severely stunt their growth rate further as they may spend their time covering the stores and the ewes instead of eating.
