new piglets
« on: March 25, 2013, 09:32:21 pm »
Hi everyone I have been offered 2 12 week old kune kune piglets by a friend of my boss I have a spare piece if land on the allotment that has just been fenced off and the grass is growing nicely which would be perfect for them as my plan was in a few months take the three I have to the abbitior and get piglets. But as this is happening now I would only like to get rid of 2 of the pigs I have now (the bigger ones) would the other one if I decide to keep him be nasty towards the new piglets if I put them together as I would not want him to be on his own as he is so gentle but I am not sure how adult one would react arount piglets. Is it a big no no

Thanks again gavin

What sex are they ? And are any males castrated ?

Gilts are far more likely to settle together than entire boars, but if the males are castrated they might settle because the little ones will automatically give the bigger ones top spot. You'd have to watch for the big one deciding to assert his authority and he'd probably bully the little ones at feeding time  :-\
You definately don't want to mix gilts and uncastrated male Kunekunes - they become sexually mature far younger than the bigger breeds and you would get a surprise litter of piglets.

The piglets are castrated males and the three I have are uncastrated the one I would like to keep is the smaller who was getting bullied by the other and only the last week or so he has been allowing me to get anywhere near him as before he would leg it around the pen when anyone went near him from what I have seen since I have had them he is not nasty in anyway shape or form but I know these are animal and can change instantly

You might be okay
Our breeding boar has mixed really successfully with younger castrates.
Just watch for bullying, especially at feeding time  ;)

Might be lucky if you can put them all on neutral ground or introduce the more mature pig to the younger ones' territory.  If it's the other way around he'll perhaps be more likely to take offence!
