HELP- GETTING MY FIRST SHEEP
« on: March 04, 2013, 08:27:47 pm »
(Lambing starts in April here)
I'm 16 and I have wanted to get my own sheep for a while now. My parents have kept sheep in the past and I had helped.
I have 5+ acres to use however the grass has been under grazed and the grass needs to be grazed as soon after the end of April as possible.
Would orphan lambs do the job of cutting down the grass quickly enough or would I need an elder flock?
I want to raise sheep for meat as I already raise rare breed pigs and would love to get some lamb in the freezer. I would also sell meat. I know orphan lambs take a lot of time and effort to rear but I have study leave starting in May so have loads of time on my hands. I have also raised orphans before.
Hope you can help me!
Thanks

Firstly good luck with sheep.
You have a good size plot for your sheep. I would put ewes on it, soon the grass will grow like stink and might struggle to keep on top of it - unless some was set aside to take a crop off. How about ewes in lamb so you get the lambs for your freezer Plus the start of your own flock.
