 Has anyone seen this facebook page ' Recognition for the Border Collies Heritage'
It aims to 'contribute to a permanent symbol of respect and thanks, to the contribution made by Adam Telfer, and the Border Collie, to Farming throughout the World. This page is fighting for recognition, in the village of Cambo in Northumberland, to be recognised, as the ancestral birthplace of this incredible Dog.'

Yes I've come across this page - and good luck to them if it puts their village on the map and gets some tourism in.  To be honest though I don't really "get" this "Auld Hemp was the first border collie" thing - did he come off a spaceship or something or did he have a mother and father and brothers and sisters?  I'm sure that shepherds were using sheep dogs long before 1893.  Auld Hemp probably was the start of one of the best lines in border collies and maybe the first to be called a border collie but the wide variety of physical features in this breed surely point to a very varied ancestry??.  (apologies if this is all explained in the video - I'm at work and can't turn the sound up :-) )

I think your probably right - he is not even no1 in stud book. But I think he was the start of a new type of working collies & he is behind every modern Border Collie. I think they are using him as a focus to highlight the role of all Border Collies

I purchased my first ever Border collie from a farm very near to Hadrians Wall in Northumberland. She was the most intelligent dog that I have ever had.

well my grandfather came over from Skye in 1886 with his working collie dogs    or were they just dogs prior to this immaculate inception

Hi..My name is Simon, and I'm the guy who started this campaign...
We have a new website too (which you're very welcome to check out)....The reason Hemp is Number nine, was because of the way the original studbook was laid out, and the timing. Of course, many Collies have gone into the Mix, to produce the Dogs we recognise today..and yes, there have been Herding Dogs since way before Hemp...BUT he is generally considered to be the original 'Father of the BC... Earlier Dogs were as rough as a Bulls Lugs!

The campaign however, is more about Highlighting the Work that Shepherds and Dogs perform today.
