Hi Gavin
I am not an expert, but.....
You are right in that you can't feed any fruit or veg that has been in your kitchen or has come from a  supermarket etc. (nor any other foods like bread etc)
You can feed fruit and veg straight from the garden/polly tunnel, or from a veg packing plant where there is no risk of contamination. I do think that they need to be approved though.
Is there anyone near you clearing the last of their winter veg out of their polly tunnels that they could give you stalks or such like. My kunes loved the broccoli stems from my neighbours garden.
Also farmers can do loads of pony carrots that would be okay because would be straight from the field. But to honest it's not a great time of year to source much veg too
The reason that they got fruit and veg in the last place was probably that lots of people just feed it where ever it has been and that would be up to you but it would be illegal and you can be fined :o :o

Gavin,

There is no need to feed them fruit and veg, they're outdoors so will get lots of tase from the environment.

People generally only feed fruit and veg when it is free or very cheap  - either from Garden or waste from veg merchant.

You can feed waste food from a supermarket, providing it meets HACCP controls and is regsitered with the local authority. There are strict controls on the disposal of meat from supermarkets nowadays (it can't go to landfill for instance), so many are already compliant, but it can take some effort to obtain waste bread/veg and many aren't interested, or you may get vast quantities!

Feeding stuff you buy from a supermarket comes under the same rules as above, so you'd need to be happy that these conditions are in place, but all supermarkets do not mix staff between the sections without strict HACCP.

If you've got a good old fashioned green grocer near you (that only sells fruit & veg) you can buy from there in confidence  We stock up at the fruit & veg market/wholesalers every month too.

With Kunekunes we feed 1 pound of pig nuts per pig, per day (usually into 2 feeds) give them hay ad-lib when there's no grass and as much fruit & veg as they'll eat (which is lots  ::))
