How much to feed?
« on: January 11, 2013, 05:15:49 pm »
I have inherited a couple of full grown Saddleback sows, and unsure quite how much to feed them? I was thinking of 4pounds of sow rolls, plus left over veg and bread etc. How does this sound to you experienced pig folk?

Plump! But they only arrived yesterday. The 4 pound plus veg was per pig

they say 4lb of veg/fruit is equal to 1lb of food, bread is supposed to be more fattening i might be inclined to do 3lb of sow rolls each as they are over weight and keep an eye on them then when they get put into pig increase it then.

In my experience 4lb of pig feed each a day is enough for fully grown saddlebacks that are not feeding a litter. Even at that amount they may still put weight on and you may need to reduce it a bit.

Just remember that your 'left over' veg & bread can't come from home :o  !!

4lb sounds about right to me, its a good amount to maintain, if you want to diet them a bit knock off a pound and replace with fruit/veg and make sure they are exercising, a small pen is no good for grown sows they need to be in an area they can at least run otherwise their legs go and they get lardy. Even when ours are in for the winter i let them out for a good walk round the farm/orchard for a good hour and they have a good sized exercise yard as well.
