Top up feed For piglet?
« on: January 11, 2013, 10:18:26 am »
One of my Kune piglets isn't doing too well. He isn't putting on any weight, in fact he is now tiny compared to the others, and his breathing seems stained. Any advice as to what to do? I was thinking to give him top up feeds but not sure what the best thing is to give him. They have lots of straw and a heat lamp to are nice and cosy! Any advice greatly appreciated. Fu

I'm not a KK expert but see you have goats so you could top him up with diluted goats milk, the strained breathing may suggest other issues, if hes older than a week a very small dose of an antibiotic may help this.
You're doing all the right things keeping warm etc, double check he's getting his share at feed time, if he's having to fight for a feed he might just have given up trying so try to be there and watch and help lift/latch him on if necessary.
best of luck

i agree with the goats milk but never dilute it to feed piglets it causes scours (sorry mandy) straight goats milk works well on piglets though.

we can still learn if we are willing to listen.

its not that the milk is not rich its the fat globules that get broken down during dilution thus running straight through whearas the undiluted milk line the belly and breaks down during digestion.

your right about learning something new everyday its good to learn
