Dry balding patch of skin
« on: December 17, 2012, 09:07:12 pm »
Just noticed that Ashia has a small area of thinning hair on one of her shoulders.  I gave her a groom tonight to get a closer look and that area felt matted but there wasn't any matting, if you now what I mean.  Any ideas?  Nothing has changed...feed the same, straw bedding.  Could it be hormonal? She may be in kid.

One of mine is into acrobatics  ::)  and rubs her back on the support pole for the door (difficult to describe), and she has some scabs and looses her hair in that place. At times it gets a bit raw. It is not any form of mange and she doesn't have lice. If it gets to raw stage I put some Aloe Vera gel (from horsey section in agri merchants) onto it and it heals in no time. Really impressed. Hair has grown back a bit darker in that spot though.... ???  It is getting normally a bit worse in winter, so maybe lack of sunshine.

Pom invariably has a bald stripe down her nose where she rubs.

I think your goat may be suffering from ringworm. Part the hair where the "rub" is and see if there is a red/pink ring around the base of the follicles. If there is and or there are any crusty areas, then your goat has ringworm. If this is the case, do email me and I will tell you how to deal with it. I hope this helps. Best wishes!

No crust, no pinkness just a bit rough and thinning hair.  But thank you anyway :)

Thanks Kja.  I have googled it and a number of places came up, is there any where in particular that you buy it from?  The breeder said surgical spirits and baby oil as its probably a mite found in straw or something.  Anyone heard of this fix before?

Well the oil would suffocate any mites and the surgical spirit may crack/dissolve the mites' skin/shell?

Actually I had chorioptic  (heel)mange in a couple of my goats and it was treated quickly and completely stress-free for the goat with (cattle) Eprinex pour-on. To rule out sarcoptic mange in one of my goatlings (non-lactating) she was injected with Dectomax. I think with any of these possible creepy/crawleys it is best to get the correct diagnosis (especially if it gets crusty/bloody and then possibly infected with all sorts), and then treat accordingly.

you can buy it from feed merchants.

straw mites more of a problem in barley straw, either way camrosa will sort it.
