Hello, I'm after a bit of advice please.


We got 3 female kune kune earlier in the year and a younger boar with the intention of breeding for meat. The boar has been in with them for around 9 months and no piglets. It does look as though the boar could be infertile however the girls were all 3 years when we got them and they were keep as pets and never bred from so as I understand could also be less fertile.


We now have saddlebacks and have decided to stick with them so the Kune Kune are destined for the abattoir (sausage).


My question relates to slaughter ID. The boar has an ear tag with the breeders herd no. but the girls are slapmarked. The girls are black and the slapmarks are not clearly visible so as I understand it they will also need an ear tag. Do I need to get hold of tags showing the original breeders herd no. or do I use ours?

To send a pig for slaughter they should have your herd number on the Tags, even if they have tags in them you will still have to put a second tag in them
know nothing about splapmarks as never used them

You would need to check with the abattoir as well. Our saddlebacks went with just slapmarks, but they would have accepted ear tags too. The ear tags need to be metal or at least able to survive the scalding tank and yes it is your herd number that you use.

Our abattoir said they would be happy with either ear tags or slapmark. We slapmarked and the mark shows clearly on the butchered meat.
