Finally we have Turkeys!!!
« on: November 15, 2012, 09:14:54 pm »
Finally its official after a lot of research & a long long wait of trying to find the right birds & supplier, & then after ages setting the shed up we finally have some Turkeys of 1 of the breeds I was after & we are now the proud owners of a breeding trio of Bourbon red Turkeys & their defo interesting characters that have settled in well, you can also see one of the geese in the background where I'm trying to give people an idea of the set up which was basically 1 big shed that was 2 sheds which had to be reconverted but I wanted it so the geese & turkeys could veiw one another safely & to be honest my 1 big worry was introducing them to the geese who don't seem to bothered at all & they just toddle off with our ducks normally doing their thing & the turkeys & chickens vice versa xxx

The stag (Male) is on the right in the pic in the field & I also got these little beuts to add to my flock of 3 & have a nice little size of 5 Barb D'Anvers.

Lovely set up.. The lady where our goat is coming from has about 10 turkeys all ready for Xmas, all big, felt very intimidated when they all came around us making their noise.. Good luck enjoy

Those aren't what you can buy as 'wild' American turkeys are they?

My neighbour had a few of those and they were mental - they would sit on the roof of his house, making people do a kind of startled double-take when they came up the drive and glide down to the little shed in his garden at roosting time like.....well......pterodactyls is as close as a description as we found.... ;D

Thanks yeah the shed could do with a lick of paint & a few repairs, but its over 25 years old so we know its last well  ;D but their not for xmas carl although it is tempting but we always have a goose which is 1 of my favorite meats (Yum) but we are intending on breeding these & using their offspring for the xmas market as we already do geese approx 15-30 a year so hopefully will do the same with these & have a load more sheds & fields to raise them on.

& no steve their definatley an american domesticated breed & they seem pretty quiet I've been stroking the stag in the shed tonight & clipping their wings earlier on today with very little hassle ;D although they can fly approx 20 ft   (Hopefully not as well now) as they were deciding to roost on top of our hen house the other night which is around 20ft high & also on the poultry arks, fortunately there's being no dive bombing yet.

I've also seen the stag displaying loads today & one of the hens :but I need good pics sorry (Has anyone else got any experiences of turkeys? I used to work with someone who had a trio & the stag was v aggressive & you had to use a broom to get him in the shed  :-\) xx
