I now have ducks which are locked up at night. Does anyone put water in for them overnight or is it ok not to put water in?  I have been putting it in with them but the mess the next morning, wow. They are let out at first light.

No, I don't put water in for my ducks, hens or geese and they're absolutely fine without it. As you say, they tend to make a mess.

My ducks and geese aren't locked up at night but the chickens are. They don't have water in with them. Once they have gone up to bed the door is shut. They are fine without water until the next morning

My ducks were locked up at night but up here through winter that can be a long time so I always gave mine water in their sheds.What I used was a lick bucket with a snap on lid and holes cut in the side so they could get their heads in to drink but not splash about. Worked fine for me.

Thats an idea that I am definately going to pinch as I find myself paddling in the morning when I go to let mine out.
