Turkey Run
« on: August 27, 2012, 05:21:51 pm »
Hi,what is the best way to construct a turkey run,I have herd from some that turkeys are good flyer's and that I will need 6' high fences with a net over the top.I herd from others that bronze turkeys have got the flying capability of a brick and that they will stay in ordinary poultry fencing I'm not sure what to think now.

Haha the picture of this turkey run was the first thing I saw when I started on the forum when you had just built it, nice to see it with birds in!
Do you clip wings to reduce the flying problem?
And have foxes managed to get in there or is it too high?
Miniature Falabella, Pygmy Goat, 2 Glouster Old Spots, 1 Long Island Red, 1 Light Sussex, 1 Dark Sussex, 1 Silkie, 1 Magpie Duck and hopefully some more chicks and ducklings due to hatch soon!

Hi,thanks for the reply, how many do you keep in that size of run. What sort of roost hut have you got for them I have been talking to others who do not shut them away at night they just let them roost in the run.
I have 12 bronze turkeys, this is the first year I have kept them.
Sorry to hear yours aren't very well at the moment there seems to be a lot of it about at the moment.

Just to say,  last year I had ours behind the standard plastic electric poultry netting. This didn't work too well, and they kept flying out over it. Because of this, I clipped their wings to keep them in, so they then took to roosting *on top* of the 6x4 shed which was their house, just to spite me! :-)

Once they got bigger they didn't seem able to fly much anyway, so were easier to keep confined.

Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear, but I hope it's helpful!

Hi,thanks Womble, please don't apologize for for handing out true advice and your experience.I would far rather spend extra on Heras fencing if thats what I need than waist money on a poultry net if its no good for what I'm doing.

Thanks Graham.

Thanks VF,I have a large shed I can use actually a wooden double garage,I might just tie a couple of mesh pannals over the doorway and keep them in there for a week so they think of this as home.
