Do you show your goats?
« on: June 15, 2012, 05:01:05 pm »
I know showing takes a lot of time and comittment, but it can be a fun day out with a trailer full of youngsters  :)   So do you show? if not, why not? would classes for wethers/pets encourage you out or is it just too expensive these days? I was just wondering!

I don't show cos no shows have classes for Old English goats and showing them in a class against big dairy goats is a waste of time.

There is just the wonderful exception of the Nidderdale Show which is sadly on a weekday so I can't get to it  :-\

I only show Males & youngsters............not keen on milkers away overnight as well as the chance of one of them picking up something they are not immune too.
Ap[art from that , am on the Scrapie monitoring scheme which has quite strict rules.  At least at the Male shows the goats can stay in their very large trailer when not needed for judging.
Even with all the care that is taken to prevent goats contacting one another....as soon as each goat finishes its class, I wipe them over with a cloth that is impregnated with alcohol jel to prevent cross infection from the Judge.... who is,lets face handling a lot of goats........you can't be too careful.

We go to a goat show for members of our local goat club, its in August and great fun! Nothing too serious and a great way for the children to gain confidence handling their goats and to feel proud when they win rosettes and trophies  :)

i was brought up in a goat show ring my parents have been showing for over 35years and show no sign of stopping they have been out 3 times this year and come back with 2 best in shows next trip out will be next week, they tend not to bother with one day shows these days as they like the goats to settle in after the journey.

i think they were dissapointed when we decided the pig ring was for us rather than the goat ring.

I have been sucked in and started to show my goats... Sometimes a bit disappointing when there are no GG classes as most judges (not all though) just completely overlook GG's... after all in a class of usually massive AOV milkers my 45Kg girls look tiny...

It is quite addictive, just such a shame that only few newcomers into goatkeeping start to show as well... my girls, especially the younger one has now milked one my BT's out at a show and shown her as well.

But the day before going is not one to have arguments with me... bathing goats, packing up, making sure that all is in its place...

The GG needs more promotion, you are in a good position just ask the secretaries to split the class to encourage you. I'd love a GG to join u in the ring, but I cant find any for sale!

I love taking my pygmy's to shows - not that I do many but it's one of my 'escape days' of the year. Hoping to do a few this summer some with my sheep and some with the goats. It's fun talking to people about them when it comes to talking about goats I can go on a bit  ;D ;D

I have been in the ring showing dogs for more years than I care to remember. I first started with my Mum in the late  '50's with Rough Collie and Shetland Sheepdog, than I worked in GSD (Alsatians) show and breeding kennels. After I married I had Gundogs (Setters) which I showed for some 25 years plus, making up champions and owning top breeding bitch. I have been judging for 20 years and still do some although I don't have setters now.
I now have Pure Toggs which when I got my first 2 goats I was adamant that I was not going back in the show ring. Ha! Now have been showing goat for 10 years.
