Hi all, I have bought a kong for my dog Freddie to use while we are out, I was just wondering what everyone else puts in them?... do you use only the kong specific treats or do you make up your own based on your dogs likes or dislikes, also is it best to freeze it?

We just fill ours with whatever dog treats we have at the time, often forcing a chew stick right through the middle too ( just to make it harder work to get the treats out.)

Apparently you can get some special kong paste but I think its been difficult to get hold of recently. Alternatively you can use something like Primula squeezy cheese or peanut butter but you have to remember that these aren't made for dogs so wouldn't use too much of them.

I used to use both of these and put bits of crunchy dog biscuits in too.  I think doing all of that used to keep me amused for as long as it took the puppy to eat  ;D

I am only a 'pet' dog keeper though so might be better to wait for some advice from one of the experts on here.

Thanks, I suppose I am a little concerned with ramming it with loads of treats that might make him fat? or that are too rich????

Have either of you frozen the Kong, I have read but cant rememebr where it was now but some owners freeze them and then give them to the dog so that they last longer?, I thought it was not good to give dogs cold or frozen food?... or is that a load of rubbish?

I would also like to add that since getting freddie it has been like a whole new world has opened up for me, I am meeting lots of people out on walks and on here, but of course the biggest plus of all is having freddie in our lives!.  :dog:

Yes people do freeze the kong with the paste  fillings but friends warned me that it makes a right mess when the dog gets it's drools onto the defrosting paste  ::)  I prefer to use dry treats.
Is Freddie a lab type?
If so then he is more prone to weight gain but as long as you monitor it and cut down his meals accordingly, you shouldn't have a problem. I always give a little less tea on days the dogs have had the kongs.

Sometimes when we were going to be out for several hours we would give our dogs frozen Kongs and they loved them.  Yes they do make a mess so it's probably best to let them have it on a kitchen floor or a crate.

It's also a good way of feeding your dog.  Instead of putting it in a bowl, stuff the food in a Kong.  If you do that, rather than getting fat on extra treats, they are just working harder for their dinner.

You can stuff with kibble or, as we feed raw, mince and veg.

Mine eat kongs so I just give them shin bones now and wash them in the dish washer to renew their taste - they go mad for them after that! ::)

The GSDs have all needed the black XL king kongs as they are much tougher. The red ones are more suited to gentler mouths.

Is that 100% peanuts only peanut butter? as some contain refined sugars?

I use sugar free peanut butter, a bit of cheese and small biscuits that are harder to get out. I also include a larger biscuit that they can't get out (they don't know this ;)) but it keeps them busy.
