Hello
« on: May 14, 2012, 09:03:36 am »
Hello,
I live in North Yorkshire and currently have an allotment (my first one) which I write about in my blog http://greenfingerninja.wordpress.com/
I am looking to start a smallholding in a few years and I am researching everything I can find. The plan is to find a small house with at least 3 acres of land where I can keep livestock, grow fruit and veg and have a farm shop where I can sell the produce. Will probably be asking lots of questions :)

Well living in North Yorkshire too, i'd say you were very brave for planting out when the weather has been so poor, but best of luck and welcome to TAS, theres quite a few yorkshire puds on here across all the ridings so no doubt they'll be along soon.

Welcome from a fellow newbie on these forums!

I'm currently in Tyne and Wear but looking at buying somewhere in Northumberland or maybe County Durham. The  description you give of your plans is amazingly similar to my own ideas (and probably many others too I guess). However I'm concious of the advice I see in many books/magazines that you should get as much land as you can afford - better to get too much than too little?

My only problem right now is that I'm getting itchy feet and I'm keen to get started so I will probably want to get going by next year at the latest if possible.

I like the idea of a keg on the allotment ;D I fancied a bottle of sherry in the greenhouse.

Hello and welcome.

I read the TAS diary for years before I finally started smallholding, and learnt an enormous amount. It is also worth subscribing to Country Smallholding magazine. A good book to read is The Smallholder's Manual by Katie Thear. I ordered it from the local library first and then bought a copy from Amazon because I knew that I would want to keep referring to it.
