Hard hat with brim - is there such a thing?
« on: March 10, 2012, 08:57:09 pm »
As the days lengthen, I'm starting to yearn for riding.

I really like my hat with the brim all round - like a cowboy hat ish - as it keeps the rain from running down my collar. However, I wouldn't ride without a hard hat. Anyone know of a combo?

In my riding days you used to be able to get a cover for the modern helmets that looked like a cowboy hat, is that what you mean? I only ever used Robinsons for my riding gear so it must have been in their catalogue I saw them.

I thought I had seen something like it - probably in Robinsons, for the same reason as you. But they don't have it now  :(

Would a normal riding hat fit under a huge cowboy hat the sort that Barbar make?

I used to ride many moons and a few less pies ago and I know what you mean, water runs down your neck and down your face and if your boots have a gap at the top, the water runs into them as well (no gap in any of mine)

Troxel made one for about a year but don't any more but you can by your own brims
Performance Equestrian used to sell Hatricks but I can't find them on their site now(despite the lady in the picture wearing one) you could try longriders gear http://www.longridersgear.com/     http://www.longridersgear.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=127&products_id=1041   (personally I think this one's too big and will get in the way) but I have seen other versions

Thanks I was looking for that one. That's the reason I warned against the bigger brim as I got the wide cutana and don't like it

Quite like this. Do you think it would keep the rain off?

I used to have a thing (20 years ago!) and it went under your hat, with a mesh head bit and a waterproof bit that hung down (think legionnaires hats!) - could be tied at the front and came over your collar. It was brillant at keeping rain off and did not restrict view like a large brim could. Don't know if you get them now as have become so much more a fair weather rider :(
