Unfortunately one of my two orphaned lambs died of bloat last night. It is tagged, can I take it to a local farmer to put with his pile of fallen stock and what paperwork do I need to do, I sent a movement record to the relevant government people when I got it 5 weeks ago so it is 'in the system'?

So sorry that you lost your lamb, it's always so sad.

You can either call your local hunt kennels (if you have one) or the company that picks up fallen stock in your area. The slaughter-man has never asked for any paperwork when he's picked up from me, I've just put it in my stock records.

I've never used another farm to get rid of fallen stock, so don't know what should be done paperwork wise in that situation.

I had to get rid of a ewe last week - our defra officer told me the phone number - it cost £14.  Sorry about your lamb, it is very upsetting

The cheapest way is to take it to your local hunt kennels (cos obviously they charge more for collecting it from you).  And get a receipt for your records (Animal Health told me that).  You don't need a movement form, but you will need to enter it in the "Deaths" section of your holding register, stating where it went to.

You can't take it to any other holding, other than registered livestock disposal places.

If you think about it, disposal of carcases by incineration is done in order to avoid disease spread, so taking a dead animal, whatever it has died of, to another farm would be putting their livestock at risk.

Thank you for your replies. I've taken it to the hunt kennels. I'm now looking for a companion for the remaining one. he is not happy poor thing.
