Sewerage ( on field) question
« on: April 30, 2012, 08:46:17 am »
Hi Folks
This is a bit of an odd one, for which any advice would be gratefully accepted.
Our main field ( which we rent) has both a foot path running over it, and the village sewer pipes running underneath it. Due to the excessive amounts of rain there has been overflow both from the sewer works (bordering the field) and the manhole covers.

Anglian water trying to sort the problem, but my question is, how long should I leave lambs and ewes off the field. (Lambs and mums currently in an open sided barn due to awful weather). I know that most human diseases aren't trnsmissable, but it seems the safest option to keep them off for at least a while.

thanks in advance
Jo

I should ask Anglian....  I used to work for Severn Trent managing the spreading of sewage sludge onto farmland for fertiliser - that was properly treated (anearobic digestion etc, so virtually no pathogens left) and that had lots of regs around when aminals could come back onto that field (probably more to do with possible cummulation of heavy metals).  Although your stuff will be miles weaker (mostly stormwater) it is still raw sewage and I think I would be interested in offical guidance (it will have ecoli etc) .  Keep us posted? Cheers, Fi

it should not happen even in heavy rain      there system is either outdated or highly inadequate
the field is no use for grazing this year   they should provide an alternative
don't give in to them and don't communicate with an oil rag
raw shite is raw shite no ifs buts or maybes :farmer:

HMMMM.
Anglian water say '14 days' for our field.
I looked on line and the advice  is keep off for 30 days for gardens, so I am not sure how that one works...I will keep digging (figuratively) and let you know if I get any more info.
