selling veg
« on: May 02, 2012, 10:48:31 am »
Hi all, I am trying to write a business plan which includes selling salad bags (the fanciest most colourful ones you have ever seen :-)), have sold them before but always direct to consumers. I will try to do this again if I can as it may be the only way to make any money, but also need to take a stab at figures for selling to shops/restaurants/box schemes, don't have even the vaguest clue what proportion of the final price I would be selling them for in these situations. Any experience? Thanks

Lesley

Most shops will want to make at least a 30% mark up, so if you sell a cabbage for £1 at the farm gate, then either you'll only get 70p via the shop, or they'll need to sell it for £1.30.  not sure if that helps at all?

I think doing farm gate sales or delivered box veg is the most profitable if you can sell everything that way.  the only advantage to selling through a third party is the quantity they'll take (ie, you can ensure you sell all your stock) but you'll need to be aware of your prices and bottom line, and be prepared to negotiate     good luck!
