I took a starter flock up to novice shepherds in Scarborough in early March. Three of my favourite, very handleable and experienced pregnant ewes were tearfully parted with to a lovely couple who are so keen and in love with the breed I felt sure they were in good hands. Bea, Beth and Clover were all expecting twins. Stephen and Christine tried to get as much lambing experience from neighbouring flocks before the event. I texted Stephen a couple of days ago just to reassure him that we're here at all stupid hours of the day and night (got 28 of our own on the maternity ward right now) as I knew Bea was due first any day soon.
He's just called me. She delivered twins fifteen minutes ago, unaided, perfectly presented and searching already to suckle. He sounded so grinny and I feel so utterly proud of my girls. I left him getting her the essentials of water and feed and advised him to check the teats are clear etc. I'm only in my fourth lambing year and still learning ( and unlearning!) so much myself, it feels GOOD to be able to set someone on that same wonderful path.
