She's arrived
« on: March 26, 2012, 11:40:09 pm »
Snowcloud, my new kid, came to live with us today.

Before I collected her, I went to great trouble dividing the shed into two and sectioning off part of the yard so that she and the others could see each other but they couldn't hurt her.  Popped her into her half of the shed and went to move the car.  By the time I got back (approx two and a half minutes) she was in the yard with the others.  Put her in her section of the yard while I redid the partition so the only gap was only about three inches,  she was perfectly happy unless the other two went oout of sight in which case she yelled.  When it started cooling down, I put her in her part of the shed where she moaned very loudly if she couldn't see the others.  Finally it went quiet so I assumed the others were inside too.  Went out to do ther milking a little later than usual and was met at the gate by three goats.  How she got through, I do not know but I have removed the hurdels and given up on that idea.  She can take her chance.

The first attempt at bottle feeding didn't go too well and she would take a full feed.  By tonight she was starving and downed the lot.  I think it helped that I had made the hole in the teat bigger.

I am so going to enjoy having her here.

That's great news   She sounds a real character!  How have the others taken to her arrival?
Don't listen to the money men - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing

we had exactly the same problem when we first had goats, the partition lasted a couple of days, with a kid-shaped hole in it!
And the pigs the same.

Welcome to the mad-house of Madely little Snowcloud, sounds like a little character ;)

When I brought in a new GG kid last autumn she decied that she did not want to live on her own and walked into the pen with the other two (that looked like her)... no problems at all, but when she tried the same with the BTs's pen it was a clip round the ears and she was out again... so it depends on the goats and how well the kid is adjusted to being with others, including other adults than her own dam.

hope she settles in well, and welcome to the fun of bottle feeding (goat) kids... I have got another one to do at 10pm tonight... It also sometimes helps to loosen the screw fitting on the bottle just a little bit to get some air inside, otherwise they sometimes are very good at creating a vacuum and nothing much comes out.

She's doing very well and certainly knows what she wants for five weeks old.   ;D  I deliberately went for a white goat, partly because all my girls have names beginning with Snow and partly because I was warned that goats are racists.   ;)  Certainly when my friend had her BA here for a few weeks, the others hated her with a vengence and wouldn't let her into the shed even when it was raining.

Pom and Curry mostly ignore her but she is very adept at side stepping the butts. The only slight problem was when she got out of the yard through the hole in the stock wire that I've been meaning to sort.  Couldn't get far as it leads onto our patio which is fenced to keep the dogs out of the rest of the garden.  When she tried to get back through, Pom kept trying to bite her.  Got her back on no trouble but the other two got out and into the small conservatory where we store the feed and i do the milking.  Now Pom's been in there twice a day for months and never noticed the feed bin.  Curry's in there for thirty seconds and shows his mum where we keep the concentrate.   ::) ::)

Got them back onto the patio where they are joined by Cloud who has escaped again.  I have a fool proof way of getting them back in the yard.  I yell hose pipe and wave it at them.  If need be I turn the tap on.  Of course, Cloud doesn't know this one but she followed the others.  Hole is temporarily blocked.

My mood was not improved by the fact that I had a student who, instead of getting on with the work I had sett him while I just popped out, was hanging out of the window in hysterics  at the antics.

Oh I love my goats.

Photos tomorrow hopefully.

How could you not! I have family who, instead of helping out during such events, just roll helplessly on the floor  ::)

Where are the photos then ?    I wonder how much longer those potty old girls will be able to cope with that place, getting very run down now.
