testicles and a scalpel just does not square with a man   some can change a crappy nappy others it gives them the boak just the same as the smell of puss it would not do if we were all made the same  and had the same ideas :farmer:

I'm quietly delighted by the turn that this thread has taken.

Yes Vikki, I seem to sit in the corner read posts and no reply to any,  a wee quick slit the balls are out cut remember not torn, a wee quick pull on the neck and the deed is done, how many other men need to vacate the place of work when castration takes place? I know it does not bother Donna helping me, she needs to learn for herself and she will get hands on experience when she is ready, we need to encopurage youngsters to participate in all farming aspects of life to continue the good work that we are doing, us oldies will no live forever  ;D ;D

My son in law did our chickens but it did not bother me too much, I detatched myself,,,do not think I could do it myself but would do it with a gun, its not so hands on..I would put little targets on them and let them run free until I got one..... ::)  I agree, your children are wonderful!!!! and nothing wrong with not wanting to kill anything!!

Vikky, I am with you on that one - just can't do it. I always found a way around it, mainly through rehoming them but I've never grown birds for the purpose of eating them (given up on being a "proper" smallholder" due to being a wuzz). Once we cooked and eat one of the drakes I made myself watch being culled.  No shame in asking for help! The best we could do to honour him was through turning him into a nice meal but it was not really worth it, tough as an old bird  ::). :&>
