White spot on nose, now enflamed ?
« on: March 03, 2012, 02:50:36 pm »
Hi everyone.  Really sorry question, my first year.  I've noticed that one of my southdowns has a strange blemish on her nose, it started as a white spot! and now looks slightly raw and enflamed (nose).  Should I just treat with antiseptic .....

I'm combing through books and websites, but any ideas or advice greatly welcomed.

Thanks

Paul

It looks as though it's a bite, sting, splinter or something.  It does look inflamed, bordering on infected.  I would think it's a good idea to give it a good clean with salty water first, you may be able to dislodge the source of the irritation and it will certainly help to reduce any further contamination.  Then, if you have an antibiotic spray, I'd use that, otherwise your antiseptic.

Can't see any scab or anything but have you considered orf?

It doesn't look like orf to me, and if there is only this one spot and only on this one sheep then it's unlikely to be orf.  However, even if it were orf, you can do nothing about the underlying viral infection but can treat any secondary bacterial infection especially if, as in this case, it is worsening.

If you think it might be orf, then washing the face in a solution of Daz (and yes, it has to be Daz, not Bold, Ariel nor any of the other brands) does seem to help.  I'd still do the salty wash on this spot first, and use antibiotic or antiseptic spray after, though.

Good luck - let us know how you get on!
