First time slapper

Hi, Im sending the pigs off soon, and have yet to slap mark them. They say once on each shoulder, but where exactly is best, just above the leg, top of the leg, nearer the back? Thanks in advance for the advice

As long as you're talking about front legs, any of the above !

This is for ID, and does not affect the meat, so placement is only for visibility.  Generally in the middle of the shoulder.

I also slap them on the bum, you know then that you've got your own pigs back. My abbatoir is very good as a rule but I did once have a lamb with three shoulders ;D

FIrst time we sent the pigs off I slapped them on the shoulder - pretty much behind the spine of the shoulder blade area. Last year I did the same for 2 of the pigs, then the 3rd I also slapped the hams as I we were going to cure and air dry them so I was curious to see that I had the right hams if you see what I mean!

First time I used too much force and the pigs were decidedly skitish when I came near them for a couple of days - last year I was less gung ho and they hardly flinched  ;D

We have only used this method once and ended up with 2 rectangles of ink!  (The pigs were going straight off to slaughter so not the ideal time but there was a delay with delivery of the kit !).  I take it that the excess would normally wear off just to leave the herdmark?

It would, the rectangle of ink was only on the bristles :)

do you need to tag and slap before taken pigs for slaughter?

it depends on how much trust you have in the slaughter house you are using        if they are slapmarked correctly it will identify your four quarters as yours
tagging depends on the rules for identifying the pig
no point in doing either after the pig is killed ;) :farmer:
