Due to farrow
« on: January 28, 2012, 11:43:51 am »
Hi, I recently brought 2 sows and a boar. One of the sows was running with the boar for 2 weeks before i had her. they have now all been together for 7 weeks. should they both be pregnant? and with what dates should they farrow? i haven't seen either of the sows come into heat that i know of. I've worked it out to be the beginning of march but not sure if this is correct..

Any help greatly appreciated.

:)

Gestation is three (calendar) months, three weeks and three days.

Other more experienced breeders will be along shortly to advise whether they should definitely be in pig - my girl has been cycling but rather iffy about service, so (using AI) I haven't got her in pig yet this winter.
Don't listen to the money men - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing

Live in a cohousing community with small farm for our own use.  Dairy cows (rearing their own calves for beef), pigs, sheep for meat and fleece, ducks and hens for eggs, veg and fruit growing

has the boar shown any interest in them        if not then he has covered them   as to when they are due you would have to assume from the date they ran togother    so about half way through there pregnancy :farmer:

One of my sows was very interested in my boar a few weeks ago and was really annoying him.  He took no mind to her and infact completely ignored her.  I thought she was in season and looking for a bit of fun .... she has since ballooned and looks like she hasn't got long until she farrows again, maybe 2 to 3 weeks give or take.  This is only my 3rd litter and her 2nd so i'm not exactly sure on dates or anything

I've a gilt who was served on 25th of November and by my reckoning will be due 21st of March.
I usually count 16 weeks and allow a few days either side  ;)

If you've not seen signs of season or the boar being 'interested' then it's perfectly possible they're in pig - or it could just be that you've missed it.
The one that was in with the boar to start with could be due at the start of March, providing she was in season when she went in and he caught her on that cycle - but otherwise it could just be a bit of a wait & guessing game. The udder should start to develop from a month before she's due and once you see a puffy vulva you're generally inside a week, milk spurting from her teats means get the heat light on cos it'll be less than 24 hours before the piglets make their arrival. But pigs have a habbit of surprising you  ::) :D

Best advice if you're not sure of the datesis to get prepared anyway, decide where you're going to farrow and get all your kit ready.
Theres an article on the GOS website in the starting with pigs section on farrowing which you might find helpful.
If you have the dates from when you got the pigs you might be able to work out a ball park date as Karen says. I have a date chart which i've attahced which might help.
All the best Mandy  :pig:
