« on: August 21, 2011, 12:26:45 pm »
One of my 10 chickens has a very long beak.....we have just returned from holiday and it seems to have grown whilst we have been away. I am told that you should not trim the beaks....please can anyone asssit?

Unless it prevents her from eating properly or she is attacking your other hens, just leave well alone.  But if either of those happens see your vet.

You can trim beaks but need to be careful that you just trim horn material otherwise it will bleed as well as obviously hurt. Easier if the beak is light horn coloured rather than dark.
Beaks will overgrow if the two halves are not in alignment, which can be inherited but can also be caused by damage to the beak.
