I need to know the size of a small bale of hay.

I am making bags for my horsey friends to pop the bales in to carry in there cars to minimise mess and don't have a clue on there size and trust me I have just bought big bales.

Cos you are on e of my favourite posters I have been out and measured for you especially, ours are:
21" x 12" x 35".

Each baler will do a marginally diff size tho - depends on how tight the machine is set to bale. I'd allow a good few inches on top of the max size you are given for a bale to fit inside easily.

I use an old single duvet cover to transport bales in the car works a treat

I have got two different lots of hay bought in this year - one lot is baled very tight, and bales se smaller, but they are heavy to carry.  The other lot seem so much longer!!  I suppose it depends on how the machine was set .....not much help when you are making bags.  But a good idea - hay gets every where in a car!!

Put some photos up and let us know how much they are - I had to spend £50 to get my car cleaned of straw (and other bits of muck) last year, so a bag would be a great idea.

I will do when I work out a design that would suit the majority of bales and find material that is light but very strong

I think they'd realise a large heston wouldn't go in the boot of the average family saloon, tizaala    Nor a mini-heston, come to that.  Just off to measure our bales for you ellisr....

I thought OhLaLa's sizes sounded a bit odd - in order to stack correctly, the bale must be exactly twice as long as it's wide.  They are usually a little deeper than (half as long as they are wide)

Some of the people who get the odd bale from us for their rabbits etc may be interested in your covers, ellisr - it takes them a long time to open the bale and pack individual flaps into bin bags...     Horsey folk and sheepy folk usually have some means of transport that is used to wisps of hay!

As said measurements will vary according to the setting on the baler, and make of baler. We have a diff of just 1" in one direction and 5" in another, pretty normal really as in my experience balers are a law unto themselves and the older they get the more temperamental they get.

I 've previously purchased even smaller bales but I think your measurements are a good one to work with and a carry bag will be handy for folks.

Some of my horsey friends use there cars to go to the stables and sometimes the fields are a bit far from the hay storage to walk with a bale so they pop it in the back of the car and a few smallholders around here sometimes don't have the use of a farmer to move things for them (like me since the landrover blew up). So I think they maybe useful for a few people but just trying to design something that is strong and easy to use. I have been looking at rip stop nylon as it is light, strong and the hay doesn't stick to it so easy clean. I am tryig to design an adjustable strap system that goes around the bale with handles on to make it easier to lift into car and obvious a drawcord to fasten to keep the hay in.
