The locals can object all they want but if it isn't a listed objection under planning law they will be ignored.  For instance you do not have a right to a view! You have doen teh right thing by approaching the planners with your ideas - they are usually pretty well right in their views, but get a good architect with a good reputation - I didn't and have big problems.

a lot of good it is objecting to a planning proposal if it is ignored       as i know from bitter experiance           and once granted the forkers dont want to know and give you the biggest runaround ever  >:(
