AI : the first mistake...
« on: May 08, 2011, 04:51:07 pm »
I ordered the semen to arrive Saturday am because I thought I might need it Sunday.  But since I wasn't sure whether I would need it till Monday or maybe even Tuesday I thought it a good idea to keep it cool, so I put the whole sealed polystyrene box in the fridge.

Everyone who's done this before already knows I should have mentioned this on this forum...

Today I decided we'd use the first bottle so I got the box out of the fridge and opened it up to get out and study the instructions.  Which of course say you should not refrigerate the semen...

One lives and learns.  ::)

[I will be suggesting to Deepark that they either tell novices about this when the order is placed or, better yet, they put the instructions on the website and/or in one of those 'documents enclosed' pouches on the outside of the box.]

Since I am not after a mega-litter this first time anyway, hopefully enough of the bilions of little wrigglers will be ok to get the job done.  Will post an update later.  Meanwhile am off to do sheep work while the piggy semen warms up...

You may be OK Sally if it was all in the closed polystyrene box.  It insulates the contents, so possibly it wouldn't get as cold as if it wasn't in the box....not sure if that makes sense!

Give it a go anyway, even if it doesn't work you will have had the experience and know what to do exactly next time.

Good luck and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that it all works out OK.
