Oh no, my furniture
« on: April 06, 2011, 03:39:23 pm »
Our furniture is in store and has been for 8 months.  Checked it a few times, and all well.  In a big container, at a reputable storage depot, we were assured it was dry, 24 hour security and we could have access whenever we wanted.

This morning, got a call from the depot to say could one of us go over, as "something had leaked from our container into the one behind"  Very strange, as all we have in ours is furniture ......It had rained heavy last night and the night before, but surely the container was water tight?  Hubby works only three miles away, so left work and went to unlock the container.  He rang me to say there was no "leak" but the container was full of condensation, which must have been the problem with the one behind too.  The manager admitted that those two containers and one next to had had problems in the past - so why the heck did he not sort the problem before letting those containers out again??

He gave hubby dust sheets, and a claim form (insured for up to £1,000)  He did not have time to move all the furniture, as its stacked up.  But said the settee is mouldy ......that was a nice settee when it went in there.  What is more worrying is the fact that my Old Charm oak furniture is in there, including a brand new sideboard.  I save up and add to my collection as and when I can afford to.......and I know they are on top of the other things, as we put them there to prevent them getting scratched and damaged, so highly likely they are ruined too.

I hardly dare go and look - a lot of my furniture is old, and antique, including a large rocking horse.

We put our things there believing they would be safe and dry, and it appears not .......  I could cry :'(  but that will not solve anything. At the end of the day its only furniture, but its furniture I was fond of, and sadly most of it cannot be replaced.

Oh that's awful. I would be so tempted to claim costs from the company, that is ridiculous.

Demand another storage unit that you can empty yours into, so you can check each and every item (take plenty of photos, for the insurance claim)

its outrageous that they know they have condensation problems yet continue to let people store their much-loved belongings in there.
Make a fuss!!

(and I hope it isnt too bad....)

The problem is all the units are taken - and all the other storage places are likely to be full.  From the description from OH, it is my antique drop arm settee thats ruined.

Maybe the insurance claime will cover getting the sofa washed, dryed and recoved, it may be a blessing in disguise, the wooden stuff should recover, fingers crossed, if hubby works near, maybe he can go and open up the storage for a while each day and have his lunch there.....the air will help!!!!
