Ponies and goats have been on some big bale haylage, really lovely stuff, quite dry. Finished the last bale. and farmer was struggling to get good quality bales. Let us have one bale. Opened it, and it was not as dry as the others, and quite strong smelling. Ponies ok with it, but goats, especially the pygmys, were not at all keen. In fact the pygmy billy has been eating straw in instead!!
Had to go to Lancashire this morning, about an hours drive, as we had rung about some big bale meadow hay. The man said we would not be disappointed, and we weren't. Brilliant stuff it is. Rolled two big bales into the horse trailer. It was £35 bale, which is cheaper than round here - £48 for decent big bales.
Goats were so pleased to see us return with the nice hay, and I am relieved we found some. No use having more haylage, the ponies will not bother with haylage pretty soon, and the goats do not eat the large bales fast enough, so hay is better during the summer months.
