hi,

I've been browsing the forum for the last couple of months so though I should join up and say hi.

I'm looking to find a smallholding/croft/farm to rent somewhere in Scotland and currently have 2 ex-bat hens, a three legged cat and 15 lts of elderberry wine slowly ageing.

Next project is to build my first beehive and a Ger (that way I can move to a field - rather than having to find a field with a house attached).

Thanks for the welcome - and offers of help with the wine.

I hadn't realised how hard it would be to find a place and some land to rent until I started looking!

Are there many people renting smallholdings on here? If so what kinda prices do you pay? I know, I know, how long is a piece of string? - but it would be good to get an idea of what we might expect to be paying for different sizes in different areas of the country.

Any leads of any places that might be available most welcome - I'm sure no else on here is looking

To be honest anywhere north of the border really - if it was affordable. Ideally within reach of a railway station - to make visits from the Grandparent's more feasible. Although I do like the idea of living somewhere remote way up North. I bet that brings it's own particular set of challenges.

Ideally we'd wait a year or so but since suitable properties for rent seem pretty thin on the ground if something came along we'd probably take the plunge sooner rather than later.

We're fifty miles from the nearest station, and it's not exactly a high speed line.

My advice, decide where you want to live and worry about the rest afterwards.

It's unlikely you're going to find both somewhere to live and the land you want at the same time, but once you've lived there a while and people have gotten to know you a bit doors might be opened.
