yes ... I agree ... but my plan organised or other wise , isn't in fact a plan , it's just what I do !!! It just seems organised when put in relationship with a disaster and written down on paper , or in a forum .
I can't do anything about radiation fallout  or any of the chemicals that they are spraying in the air for whatever reason , no more than I can filter the poison out of the air that comes from cars , I can only do the best I can , the same as everyone else .
I am in Wales , so maybe I did get some  of the fallout from Chernobyl ? I could trip over and break my neck walking out the door ... do I never walk out the door in case ? no of course not . I carry on doing what I want to do , living my life .
Trappings of modern engineering I have .  I have a lister generator , designed in the early 1930's , runs on diesel or sunflower oil or any other oil I have to hand . It is also easy to cast new body parts and pistons if needed , that's why I got it . Lathe I have .. an old Myford 7 . It will run off of the lister either by leccy or by a belt off the lister , it will also run off a belt taken off a water wheel that will power the workshop . I have the forge set up and working , and the foundry only takes a few hours to set up when I need it . I need no chemicals to smelt old cast iron or aluminium . I have already cast a few hundred pounds of ali , although it all got nicked ... bastards.
Fuel for the foundry and forge I have growing already , just need to convert it as and when into charcoal .
Each to their own , some work 40 hours and more a week , to get what they want .. I already have what I want , and just do what I want to live , when I want to . The reality is, what happens in the big bad world makes little difference to me now , and even less as time goes on.
Many things can come along and pull the rug from under me , but does that mean I should just sit around and do nothing , waiting for 'something'?  You do what you do and I will do what I do ...just enjoy whatever it is you do , I certainly do ...

cheers

Having read your posts, Russ, I think I may have found my solution to the EOTW.

All we need to do is send someone in under cover of darkness to nick your glasses, then, in the morning, we all just walk in and take over, cos you won't be able to hit anything with your bow. ;D ;D ;)

Then you'll be working for us. MMWUAHAHA  :P

lol.... thick as three short planks in series parallel me ....
No, I am not too far from Carmarthen  , sort of south west Wales. Been around this area for 34 years now .
Lived just outside Oswestry for about a year in the early 80's , but other than that , been around and about the same area since 77.

<<As for the dead end bit ... yep quite right ... so do I go and throw a rope over the nearest branch and swing ? Dead end or not , it would take a good few peeps to get me into the noose , I will only leave this planet kicking and screaming , I will not just lay down and give in, no matter what . >>

Hi Russ.  I wasn't being rude with the dead end bit, just realistic. Not much point in being the only survivor.  There are all sorts of possible ways in which we might find ourselves in a post-a-poxy-clipsy scenario.  A tsunami here isn't unheard of - there is geological evidence of a huge one in the neolithic, when Britain was still joined to Europe, which took out the east coast and may have been the cause of clearing out the channel and north sea.  That is thought to have been the result of a big chunk of the Norwegian shelf collapsing.  Then there are written records from the middle ages of a tsunami coming up the Bristol channel and wiping out a large area. All sorts of other disasters, natural and man-made, are all possibilties. We do live on a wonderful Earth, but every now and then she itches and scratches and shakes some of us off  ;D
I am not pouring scorn on your ideas at all, but I don't think you have thought it through beyond the self-survival bit.  Britain is sufficiently highly populated that 'the authorities' - in this case the military - would still be effective, and Britain is also small enough that every single smallholding is mapped.  So, you would not be able to hide your location, nor could you defend it on your own.  However, you do have a trump card in that you have a store of knowledge about the skills needed to live without modern technology which would be irreplaceable for the future of the country. So instead of thinking along the lines of trying to keep everyone else away and ending up dead, you could use your knowledge and skills to teach others how to survive - heaven knows few enough have the skills today.
I have seen all the disaster movies too, some more realistic than others, and all are fairly gloomy about how human nature will pan out to turn the world into a war zone.  I am totally naive but nonetheless I'm with I think it was ellied who said it would be an opportunity for a new and co-operative society.
And you could be King Russ  ;D

My OH is always talking gloom and doom, he said last year that Japan could be in for a big quake and now he is talking about America. What ever is going to happen will, as far as I am concerned the world has never stopped changing and will go on regardless if we are in it or not.

hello fw,
I really don't sit down and think it all through at all really . I just live my life and think , now and then , about what if ? . If there were a collapse of society then , the armed forces to an extent would step in , but there comes a point where they can do nothing , and they would just be looking after any of TPTB that are left over , or whatever.
Over the last few years we have had ever increasing demand for data and information from the government , about us and what we do etc . , even info about the land we work . I just tell them to f*ckoff , and they do , end of .
All forms about my land are filled in with "f*ckoff... none of your business" .  They did send the forms again a few times telling me I had filled them in incorrectly , i just replied that I hadn't and that I meant f*ckoff blah blah blah ... and to stop hassling me, and they actually replied saying that they were sorry , no more been heard from them .
So they won't have too many details on my little bit .  Plus they wouldn't be interested in my piddly little bit anyway .
I really think you have the wrong idea of what I am doing . I am JUST living my life , doing what I like doing .
If certain things happen , then I will cope as best I can .. that is it . Am I worried about the armed forces driving out to my place to get  what for them, would last a few days ... no not in the least . I grew up in an army family and I still know people in the forces now . I have a good idea of what would happen and what wouldn't... like I say , the army is the least of my worries. Some tit wondering around looking for food would be more of a worry then the army.
My level of teaching is .. "go read a book and do it " !!! I just want to live my life without hassle , and in the main I do . For those that want to open their doors and share their life with their fellow man , good luck to them , I don't . I have my friends and family and that's enough for me . In some apocalyptic other world existence , things may be different , till that arrives , I do what I do .

cheers

Russ

I feel that the Earth and the Universe are doing what they always did - change and move. We are just a coincidence in between, not nice when it hits us. shame that human error (thanks, Mr Oppenheimer) makes things so much worse for everybody and everything alive :'(
we can be prepared to a certain degree through being self-sufficient as much as possible but I feel my dependency on oil, electricity, mobility all the time. Who said that awareness is the first step to improvement?  Buddha? Wise man ;D :&>
